FAQ

Questions about Kanchipuram sarees

Is a jacquard attachment part of Kanchipuram weaving?

The Registry’s own papers mention it. The 2004 statement of case behind the Kancheepuram Silk registration describes the harness, called adai, as a jacquard attachment through which the designs and patterns on the sarees are achieved. Jakado weaves its Kanchipuram silk on jacquard looms in Surat.

Is there any link between Surat and Kanchipuram silk?

One, in the public register. The same 2004 statement of case mentions Surat in Gujarat in its section on zari production, and Surat Zari Craft is itself a registered Geographical Indication from Gujarat. Jakado does not describe its sarees as made in Kanchipuram: they are woven in Surat on jacquard looms.

Do you also supply Kanchipuram cotton sarees?

No cotton sarees appear among the ranges Jakado lists on this site. The Kanchipuram range here is the silk range. If you need something that is not listed, ask on WhatsApp before assuming either way.
